why did people think Lili Reinhart was pregnant?

Ever since the finale of Riverdale season 2, fans have been begging for details about the next installment, which will be gracing our TV screens for a 2018 – 2019 run. But, over the weekend, something else piqued their curiosity: a photo circulated the internet that sparked pregnancy rumors about the real-life Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper. Why did people think Lili Reinhart was pregnant, though?

This photo of Reinhart, 21, and boyfriend Cole Sprouse, 24, led to the “is she or isn’t she?” pregnancy rumors.

So, why did people think Lili Reinhart was pregnant? As it turns out, because of some good ol’ fashioned bloating.

The actress took to social media late Monday night to give fans and foes a piece of her mind.

Lili Reinhart Instagram clapback

Reinhart posted an all-too-true message on her Instagram story, calling people out for judging her body and shooting down the rumors.

“It’s unfortunate that one unflattering photo of my stomach circulating the internet causes hundreds of people to think that I’m pregnant,” she wrote on Instagram. “Nope. Not pregnant.”

“This is just my body,” Reinhart continued. “And sometimes I’m bloated. Sometimes and unflattering photo is taken of me. Sometimes I go through periods of time where I gain weight.”

Bloating happens to everyone — yes, even celebrities (because famous people are people too, plain and simple).

Kyle Staller, M.D., M.P.H., a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and instructor at Harvard Medical School, told SELF in a 2016 interview that bloating happens to most people, and it’s “extremely normal.” It can be caused by a number of factors, one of these being food.

“For people who have a normal amount of bloating, certain foods are more ‘bloat-agenic’ than others,” Staller said, naming dairy as one of the most common things we consume which could make us bloated. Of course, women also bloat around the time of their period — aka premenstrual bloating.

Moral of the story? Bloating happens. And Reinhart added a final note: “My body is something that I will NEVER apologize for. My body will constantly go through change. And so will yours. And that’s fine. So let’s not put so much time and effort into caring about a stranger’s figure.”

In short, she wants us to, well, get over it. Listen to Betty Cooper: embrace your bellies and stop looking at hers.
