Manhattan’s own edition of Smorgasburg has set an opening date and announced its list of vendors.
Beginning Saturday, Aug. 19, Brooklyn’s biggest outdoor food market — and premier showcase for the city’s next big food trends — expands to Soho with Smorg Square at Varick and Canal streets.
The original plan was to have six vendors open all week, with the roster growing to 20 on the weekends. Instead, new market will only be open Friday-Sunday with the full complement of 20 vendors, including many Smorgasburg hits one of Metro’s favorite newcomers of 2017 John’s Juice, whose colorful drinks served in hollowed-out watermelons and dragon fruit are the must-have Instagram of the summer, plus Dan & John’s Wings, Ramen Burger and Wowfulls.
New vendors will also pop up regularly, and Smorg Square will take on a night market feel on Fridays and Saturdays when it stays open until 10 p.m. Come September, a full outdoor bar will offer drinks.
Unlike its Brooklyn branches in East River State Park (Saturday) and Prospect Park (Sunday), Smorg Square will weather the winter outdoors, remaining open in November and December. Its sister market across the street, Brooklyn Flea, will transform into a holiday market.
Bringing some charm to the open plot next to busy Canal Street was a daunting task, with owners Eric Demby and Jonathan Butler enlisting the help of design firm A+I to bring a piazza-like ambiance to the square and Children’s Museum of the Arts students to decorate part of the perimeter fence.
Find Smorg Square at 76 Varick St. on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
