Heritage hikes in the Berkshires

Designated a National Historic Area, the region is dotted with small communities along the meandering Housatonic River. The towns were the incubators of the Industrial Revolution, where the iron, paper, and electrical generation industries started and developed. As technology changed, the hubs of industry became quiet villages that are equally respectful of their history and their natural surroundings.

The Heritage Walks are held over three weekends: September 19–20, September 26–27, and October 3–4. The comprehensive schedule of events touches on all aspects of the region. For history buffs, there are strolls through the towns and visits to ruins of industrial sites. Walkers and hikers can choose from several guided nature walks and birdwatching treks, while paddlers have a choice of canoe and kayak adventures along the river.
