Lawrence Phillips, one of the most troubled players in NFL history, died Wednesday at 12:05 a.m. after being found unresponsive in his prison cell.
The 40-year-old Phillips is said to have committed suicide, according to officials.
Phillips had been in a segregated cell unit for almost a year after allegedly murdering his cell-mate, 37-year-old Damion Soward.
Phillips had hinted at killing others and/or himself in the past.
“I feel myself very close to snapping,” Phillips wrote in a letter to his mother in March of 2015 (via USA Today). “My anger grows daily as I have become fed up with prison. I feel my anger is near bursting and that will result in my death or the death of someone else. “[Law enforcement] are obviously working against me with no regard to the law … they will never let me leave prison alive.”
