You don’t have to wait until Halloween to start acting spooky. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn how to read Tarot cards, cast a hex on your ex, or have your aura photographed, October is just getting started, and what better month to tap into your basic witch? Here’s where to summon your inner Stevie Nicks this month.
Feel that Full Moon Fever
On Thursday, Oct. 5, a full harvest moon — the first of autumn — will light up the sky from sunset to sunrise. We recommend putting on Tom Petty’s “Full Moon Fever” and holding your own seance/listening party in his honor. But if you want to learn more about the astrological implications of the full moon in Aries, check out this full moon gathering at the Alchemist’s Kitchen. Beginning at 6 p.m., astrologer Demitra Vassiliadis will hold a collective blessing and intention setting, followed by Tarot, aura and astrology readings, and more. Sign up here for 15-minute sessions at $25.
Discover your inner witch
At Catland Books, Bushwick’s occult mecca/spiritual community space, you can learn hexes, jinxes, love potions and how to talk to the dead via Witchcraft 101 workshops ($20) held every Wednesday of the month and taught by Brooklyn-based witch Dakota Hendrix. Check out the events calendar for the full docket of divine happenings this month, or book a reading anytime in spellwork, astrology, or tarot and divination (prices vary).
Learn the Tarot deck
Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to read Tarot, but when it comes to deciphering the Major and Minor Arcana, you feel like the Hanged Man. Find out why drawing that card isn’t necessarily a bad sign and more tricks of the trade this Saturday, Oct. 7, at Brooklyn Brainery’s Tarot Card Basics ($35).
At Maha Rose, another Bushwick den of the divine, you can learn Tarot 101 — $45 for drop-in classes held every Sunday of the month.
The Tarot School in Forest Hills holds a Tarot Salon every Monday night, an all-levels workshop at $20/session.
Do your astrology birth chart
If you read what Susan Miller has to say about your sign every month and retweet Astro Poets on the regular, but you’re craving more knowledge, you might be ready to have your birth chart read. Taking into account the exact time, date and geographical location in which you were born, an astrologer can tell you all about what the stars were up to at that moment and what that might mean for your past, present and future.
Bushwick’s Tarot Society offers birth chart readings ($60/hour), or, on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Maha Rose, learn the basics of how to do it yourself at this $40 intro session.
Get your aura photographed
If you’ve ever wondered what the color and vibe of your “aura” — allegedly, an invisible energy field that’s unique to each person — looks like, Magic Jewelry in Chinatown will photograph and analyze your supernatural side for $20.
