For the first time, the Progressive Insurance New York Boat Show features its own Progressive Boat School to complement its regular array of seminars and classes for fishermen and recreational watercraft enthusiasts at every skill level. The Progressive Boat School is available all five days of the show and tackles topics like line-throwing, docking and navigation. You’ll get tips from Annapolis School of Seamanship experts who can also help buyers decide which vessels will suit their lifestyle best. Education is available through three platforms that combine to give boating enthusiasts a well-rounded picture: informative seminars, live demonstrations and hands-on practice. The lessons take place onboard a display model on the showroom floor, allowing for live, interactive learning with the professional mariners on deck. Guests can try their hand at the skills being discussed through virtual simulations and remote-control docking. Depending on your experience, you can get pointers on how to be a first-rate first mate or learn the steps to obtaining your own captain’s license. This new set of integrated learning opportunities joins the boat show’s regular roster, including Fred’s Shed Interactive Learning Center, which focuses on do-it-yourself lessons for boat and motor maintenance, repairs and upgrades. Question-and-answer sessions follow the instructive demos. There’s also the Electronics University and Discover Fishing Seminars, provided by the Recreational Fishing Alliance, which cover topics like fly and tackle, offshore safety, rigging and automatic identification systems. Don’t miss NYC-specific info on fishing hot spots, local species and techniques. Even if you’re just starting out, you’ll be walking with the swagger of a pro after attending all of the free learning opportunities available with your ticket to the New York Boat Show.
