Coca-Cola has revealed that it might consider making a cannabis drink.
On Monday, a spokesperson from Coke said the company is watching the CBD market and is in talks with the Canada-based marijuana producer, Aurora Cannabis, to come up with ideas to develop a cannabis drink along with its other Coke products
“We are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world,” Coca-Cola spokesperson Kent Landers said in a statement to Bloomberg News.
CBD is the non-psychoactive ingredient or component in marijuana that can be used to treat pain and other ailments but it doesn’t get you high. CBD is often used in beverages, snacks and other treats for herbal treatment. It also comes in daily supplements.
There’s already a demand for CBD drinks and there are some chefs and bar owners who have already incorporated some CBD products in their menus. In addition to cannabis drinks and other CBD-infused foods and supplements used to help relax or treat minor ailments, the company Therpet makes CBD products available for dogs to treat pain and anxiety, control seizures and help with other pain-related issues in dogs.
Bloomberg News reports that Aurora Cannabis stock shares surged shortly after Coca-Cola announced it may consider working with the cannabis producing company to make CBD-infused Coke beverages.
Cannabis drink infused with Coca-Cola: What we know so far
As of now, both companies are in the early brainstorming stages, according to Bloomberg News. It appears that several ideas might be on the table for both companies to work together in a growing market and produce a cannabis drink mixed with Coke.
“The space is evolving quickly. No decisions have been made at this time,” Landers said.
If CBD-infused Coca-Cola products become a reality, the company could unearth the 1980s ad campaign and slogan, “Have a Coke and a Smile” and have it take on a completely different meaning.
