Is Garrett Hedlund involved in Jared Leto’s ‘Tron 3’?

Garrett Hedlund talks Tron 3

Jared Leto’s recent confirmation that he is looking to bring a new Tron film to the big-screen led many to assume that those that starred in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” wouldn’t be joining him.

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to talk with Garrett Hedlund, who played the character of Sam Flynn in “Legacy,” about his upcoming drama “Mudbound,” which is released on Netflix on November 17. Towards the end of our discussion I turned the topic to “Tron 3” and asked Hedlund whether Leto’s involvement in the alleged reboot has jeopardized his return.

Hedlund stopped way short of saying his involvement with the franchise was over, though, and even teased that he is hopeful something will be resolved.

At first Hedlund explained why the long touted “Tron: Legacy” sequel never materialized, remarking, “A couple of years ago we were nearly able to go with a ‘Tron: Ascention,’ but because of what was going on with the financial state of the studio and the stuff at that time didn’t allow it to,” before then adding, “But we’ll see what the future holds.”

It would appear as though Hedlund is still holding out hope to be involved with a potential new “Tron” film. But “Tron” fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet, though, because even Leto admitted that there is a long way to go before the sci-fi film is a reality.

“It was a huge movie for me as well and I do think there’s so much potential in that world,” Leto told Collider last month. “There’s so much left to be said. I’m absolutely game to try to help in any way that I can bring that to life.”

“It’s something that we’re in discussions about and very much looking forward to bringing to reality. It’s very early days though.”

Considering the issues that blighted the development of “Tron: Legacy’s” sequel, and the 28 year gap between “Legacy” and the 1982 original, it could take a while before “Tron 3” is ready for production, though.

In the meantime, make sure you check out Garrett Hedlund in “Mudbound” when it is released on Netflix on November 17.
