It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn political at the 89th annual Academy Awards Sunday.
During his opening bit, host Jimmy Kimmel turned the spotlight on Meryl Streep, giving a nod to her lifetime of achievements on the screen.
As Streep stood to take a bow, Kimmel said, “Nice dress… is that an Ivanka?”
She was wearing a custom blue Elie Saab.
Streephas been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, who’s clothing label has been expelled by big-name retailers recently.
At the Golden Globes last month Streepwas awarded theCecil B. DeMille Award by the Hollywood Foreign Press Associationfor her “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” She used her acceptance speech, just days after Trump announced his controversial travel ban,to take aim at Trump, saying”Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick us all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts, which are not arts.” Twitter loved it.
