It’s on us for Fleet Week, New York tells sailors, Marines and Coasties

If you’re a sailor. Marine, or Coast Guardsman in New York this week for Fleet Week, your money’s no good because it’s on us this time.

From May 25 through May 31, an estimated 4,500 servicemen and women are expected to flock the city’s streets during Fleet Week New York — now in its 28th year.

During the weeklong event beginning Wednesday, the city will celebrate the maritime services and give New Yorkers the chance to meet the sailors, Marines and Coasties, and get a firsthand look at what they do.

And what better way to celebrate the hardworking men and women than by offering them a wide-range of freebies and discounts.

The USO of Metropolitan New York has compiled a list of discount sites in a booklet available for servicemen and women online at usonyc.org.

Among the freebies are free transportation — for those wearing their service uniforms — on all MTA subways and buses; a free ticket for the choosing of a double decker Gray Line bus tour; and free admission to the 9/11 Memorial, Bronx Zoo and Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

Along with the freebies, there are also large discounts throughout the city that servicemen and women can enjoy.

Some of the discounts include 10 percent off all food, non-alcoholic beverages and merchandise at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. with VIP priority seating; a free glass of wine with purchase of an entrée at Michael Jordan’s The Stake House N.Y.C at Grand Central Terminal; 50 percent off any menu item at Pinkberry located at 7 West 32nd St.; and 20 percent off at Slate, located at 54 West 21st Street.

Other Fleet Week perks include 20 percent off admission at the 9/11 Tribute Center; half off admission at Madame Tussauds New York; and a complimentary VIP shopping pass and gift from The Shops at Columbus Circle.

There are also discounts on walking tours, water taxis, historical tours, helicopter tours, and cruises.

The USO is expected to be on hand at each location where ships will dock across the city. Eleven ships are expected to dock at sites including Pier 92 in Manhattan, Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and USS The Sullivan’s Homeport Pier in Staten Island.

“For 75 years, The USO has continued its timeless mission to strengthen America’s service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation,” the USO said in a statement. “Fleet Week New York is just one of the many ways the USO continues our important mission of connection.”

During Fleet Week New York the public will also get the chance to visit ships, listen to military bands perform, and partake in numerous exhibits and demonstrations showcasing the naval services’ latestt technology.
