Jets cut Steve Weatherford after Ryan Quigley is deemed good to go

In an expected move, the New York Jets cut punter Steve Weatherford on Wednesday, clearing the way for the return of incumbent starter Ryan Quigley.

Weatherford was signed this past weekend prior to the Jets Week 7 loss at the New England Patriots. Quigley, the regular punter, had suffered a shin injury that week and was unable to go, making the impetus for the Jets to make a move quickly. It was Weatherford who ended up punting for the Jets on Sunday in the loss.

Sources tell Metro that on Wednesday morning, Quigley was examined by the team’s medical staff and received positive feedback about his condition. The expectation is for him to be able to practice on Wednesday and play Sunday in their game at the Oakland Raiders.

A former Jets punter who was most recently with the New York Giants, Weatherford is a steady NFL veteran. He was brought in on short notice because of his availability but also because he was based in north Jersey near the Jets facility.

Now in his third season with the Jets, Quigley is averaging 42.4 yards per punt. His directional punting in particular is seen as an asset for the Jets special team’s unit.
