The Jets emerged from the first round of the NFL Draft with a true steal as USC defensive end Leonard Williams, the highest ranked player on most mock drafts and draft boards, there for the taking with the sixth pick. And it is a scenario they had played out before during their preparation for the Thursday night’s first round. A team source tells Metro that the Jets had gone through different scenarios and different mock drafts to sort out their draft board in the weeks before the draft. The situation was set-up to emulate the draft and different scenarios that might emerge. One of the scenarios presented to the war room had Williams falling to the sixth pick and at least one of the two top receivers on their draft board, Kevin White or Amari Cooper, also on the board as well. And in that situation, the Jets took Williams, just like they did on Thursday nights.
In reality when they were officially on the clock, the Jets did their due diligence with the source saying that they “explored trade options with multiple teams” but that at the end of the day, nothing matched the value they saw in Williams. His junior year at USC, he was named the MVP of the Trojans as well as being an All-PAC 12 selection.
