Jilted Bronx dad to spend 20 to life for poisoning pizza, killing son

A father who allegedly tried to kill himself and his two children with a rat-poisoned pizza and ended up murdering his son was sentenced to no less than 20 years on Thursday.

Leonardo Espinal, 49, could spend the rest of his life in prison for the death of his 5-year-old son Steward and poisoning of his daughter.

A jury convicted Espinal for his part in a revenge plot to get back at his wife Rosaura Abreu, who he found out was seeing another man and kicked him out of the family home.

Authorities said Espinal wrote a suicide note before he laced a pizza with rat poison and set it down in front of Steward and sister Mia.

Mia threw up after eating the pizza, while Steward soiled himself. Espinal took the boy into the bathroom and refused to come out while Espinal’s stepmother called 911.

Cops arrived and broke the bathroom door down to find the boy dead in the bath tub and Espinal dazed but still alive.

“Mia will have to live for the rest of her life with the horrific memory that her own father caused in attempting to kill her,” Abreu said in a statement. “All we can do is take it day by day.”
