John Cena served up a “bowl of sadness soup” during an interview with “Today” co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford on Monday morning.
The actor and WWE icon opened up about the recent end of his engagement with fellow wrestling star Nicole “Nikki” Bella. The couple has been pretty quiet since their break-up in April, only sharing a brief statement to the media as well as small tidbits about their feelings over social media.
Less than a month after the announcement, Cena is revealing a bit more of thoughts on the relationship’s end, telling Kotb and Gifford that he’s had an “incredibly reflective” time since parting ways with Bella.
“I had my heart broken out of nowhere,” Cena admitted. “Anyone who’s experienced that knows that it comes with a series of bad feelings.”
While it’s been rough few weeks for Cena, the wrestler-turned-actor went on to say that he still loves his ex-fiancé and wants to start a family with her.
“I still love Nicole,” Cena said. “I still would love to marry Nicole. I still would love to have a family with Nicole.”
As for what caused the break-up, Cena didn’t say much except that “an unfortunate set of circumstances” led to the end of the relationship. He added that, contrary to some speculation online, he isn’t enjoying the single life all that much.
“I was supposed to be married and have a honeymoon over these two weeks,” Cena said. “It’s the first time in 15 years that I’ve taken a vacation. I am in my house alone, surrounded by these emotionally strong memories, and everyday from six to nine, I get out of the house and talk to strangers as social interaction.”
Cena made it clear that his only wish is to get back together with Bella if she’s willing to give their relationship another chance.
“I don’t want anybody else,” Cena said. “I love Nicole and I’m really trying to support her in her trying to find whatever it is that she wants that made this fall apart in the first place.”
“I don’t have any other hopes other than maybe one day that we can work it out,” he added.
