Jon Beason out for season with foot surgery

The Giants were hopeful Jon Beason would be able to return from a foot injury after their Week 8 bye. Instead, they’ve found out he’ll be out for the rest of the season.

Beason, the team’s middle linebacker and a captain, will undergo surgery on his right foot, but the procedure has not yet been scheduled. Beason injured his toe against the Cowboys last week. He visited foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson over the bye week, who recommended surgery.

Beason, 29, admitted in an interview with WFAN’s Mike Francesa last week that season-ending surgery might be the best course of action.

Of course, Beason missed all of training camp and preseason with a foot injury suffered in June which required surgery. It was diagnosed as a right seismoid bone fracture and torn ligaments at the time.

While he returned for Week 1, he was again injured and missed Weeks 3, 4 and 5 before returning against Philadelphia and Dallas. He finishes the season with just 11 tackles in four games.

Beason was acquired in a trade last season with Carolina and immediately solidified a struggling defense. The team was 0-5 when they traded for Beason, but went 7-4 after he joined the team.

His leadership garnered him a captaincy during the preseason vote from the team.

Beason is actually the second captain on the team to suffer a season-ending injury, joining wide receiver Victor Cruz. Cruz tore his ACL against Philadelphia a week prior.

The linebacker just signed a three-year, $16.8 million contract this offseason. He’s due a $1.375 million roster bonus in March. Now the team will have to decide whether the injury is something that will linger, and whether they want to keep him.
