Just a president and his dog: How White House canines inspire US pet owners

Presidents’ Day is just around the corner, but it’s already gone to the dogs … U.S. presidents’ dogs, that is!

Dog-walking and pet-sitting networking site Rover.com has released some fun facts about commander-in-chiefs and their first dogs just in time for Monday’s holiday.

Of the 45 presidents who have occupied the Oval Office, an astounding 32 of them have had a dog — or two. Many of those first canines even inspire dog names outside of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. as well.

Other notable facts from Rover.com:

• Thanks to the popularity of the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” the name “Alexander Hamilton” increased 14 percent over the past year, and other names from the musical jumped 15 percent.

• “Grant” also increased 14 percent, which could refer to real President Ulysses Grant or fictional President Fitz Grant from ABC hit “Scandal.”

• “Buddy,” which was the name of President Bill Clinton’s Chocolate Lab, is the third most pup-ular name for male dogs.

• “Lincoln” saw a 17 percent increase a dog name over the past year.

• “Carter,” “Ford” and “Bush” rose in pup-ularity, while “Reagan” and “Barack” decreased.

• “Parker,” “Charlie” and “Diego” were the Top 3 names for dogs in historically Democratic states.

• “Coco,” “Gracie” and “Toby” were the top names in states that traditionally vote Republican.

• The top breeds in Republican states are border collies, boxers and Australian shepards.

• Poodles, Maltese and Yorkshire terriers are the most popular breeds in Democratic states.
