Knicks waive white flag on their 2016-17 season

The Knicks did not trade off big name players Carmelo Anthony or Derrick Rose at last week’s NBA trade deadline but Monday’s moves by the club signified that they are already thinking primarily about the 2017-18 season.

The team waived point guard Brandon Jennings and big man Joakim Noah underwent season-ending surgery.

Jennings was thought to have been a good get for the Knicks prior to the season as he figured to give New York a scoring jolt off the bench. His numbers in a reserve role behind Rose were decent as he averaged 8.6 points and 4.9 assists per game in New York. The Knicks reportedly tried to trade Jenning last week but could not find any suitors.

“Thank you to all the Knicks fans for the love all year long, and thanks to my teammates and the organization,” Jennings tweeted. “Playing in the Mecca was an amazing experience and I’m looking forward to being back on the court soon playing the game that I love.”

Washington and Charlotte have emerged as top candidates to sign Jennings. The Knicks signed 24-yaer-old guard Chasson Randle to replace Jennings on the roster. Jennings played in eight games this season with the 76ers, averaging 5.3 points and 0.8 assists per game.

Meanwhile, Noah underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Monday. Noah has had a rough first year in New York, averaging 5.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. The former Bulls standout has three years remaining on his contract after this season.
