Leonard Nimoy, the actor best known for playing the cerebral, calm Mr. Spock in the original “Star Trek” series, has died at 83. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy confirmed his death to the New York Times, and said the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He had tweeted as recently as January 10 about regretting his smoking days. As usual, he signed the tweet ” LLAP ,” as he signed all his tweets — the acronym stood for Live Long And Prosper, the famous “Star Trek” sign off.
