If you’ve ever dreamed of being a real-life Disney princess, you might expect The Magic Makers, Disney World, to have some requirements. But what these ladies go through is a lot tougher than trying to squish your foot into a tiny glass slipper.
First, you have to look the part, or rather, parts. It helps if you already look like one or more of the Disney princesses. Most princesses aren’t allowed to be taller than 5-feet 7 inches and the biggest costume size is a 10.
And Disney princesses age out at 27.
During the audition, standing out is probably not a great idea. Since many actresses play multiple princesses during their time at the park, the women must be basically interchangeable.
Be prepared to dance, sing, read a script and complete an interview, but a necessary talent is improvisational skills.
During the five days it takes for a princess to learn her role, which includes watching the movie until you can recite it practically verbatim, she’ll also learn how to apply her makeup. Since more than one actress will play a princess role every day, everyone’s makeup has to be exactly the same. You can’t have a child meet Cinderella with blue eye shadow only to see her idol later in the day with green!
“I don’t know” is not an acceptable answer at Disney. Even if a Disney princess doesn’t know the answer to a question, she has to come up with one or skillfully dodge the question, so improv is a must.
Also, when in Disney, there is no other world besides Disney, so Pocahontas isn’t going to know where Spongebob is and Moana isn’t going to know what a smartphone is.
And creeps still manage to find their way into the most magical place on earth and sidle up to Disney princesses.
“I was hit on as Pocahontas more than Mulan or Silvermist, and it definitely has to do with the amount of clothing she’s wearing,” a former Disney princess told Mashable. “I’ve never been touched inappropriately, but there’s always the family that makes the grandpa or the dad get a picture alone and they’d whisper how pretty I was or ask when I got off of work. I’d get slipped the occasional phone number on a napkin, but nothing ridiculous has ever happened.”
And regardless of the weather, a Disney princess has to smile, smile, smile! So much it hurts!
But it’s the price they pay to enchant the lives of millions.
