World Mosquito Day is celebrated on Aug. 20 to commemorate Indian doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.

Though malaria cases have dropped by 18 percent in the past five years, an ongoing Zika epidemic is now a concern. According to the World Health Organisation, the virus could spread throughout most of the Americas by the end of 2016.
