New Yorkers are protesting the looming closure of a City landmark, Midtown Manhattan’s Cafe Edison, which plans to close in late December after failing to renew its lease. Part of the Hotel Edison, the cafe has long been a destination for celebrities and Broadway enthusiasts, serving up comfort and coziness in contrast to Times Square’s surrounding big-name chain restaurants. “For over thirty years, Hotel Edison and its ownership has enjoyed a wonderful, productive relationship with the Edison Cafe. We can confirm that the Café is closing as the hotel prepares to upgrade and restore the space,” Richard Hotter, the Hotel Edison’s General Manager, recently told BroadwayWorld. In an effort to change the minds of hotel management, fans of the so-called “Polish Tea Room” gathered outside the restaurant on Saturday to protest, gather signatures, and of course, dine. Protestors also took to social media, using the #SaveCafeEdison hashtag. Despite the outpouring of support, the restaurant’s owners have agreed to move out of the space, with plans to find a new location for their celebrated eatery.
