Several buildings lost power in Midtown Tuesday after a fire erupted at a manhole on 37th street,NBC New Yorkreported. The eruption sent thick black smoke into the air and the fire burned for several hours before authorities got it under control.
There were no injuries reported and no evacuations were ordered. Bystanders were escorted to safety by firefighters and police officers.
Both authorities and Con Edison crews responded to the manhole fire and the cause is still unknown. Part of 37th Street was shut down for further investigation. Twitter user Michael Hussey posted a video of the eruption.
