Mayor Bill de Blasio officiates weddings to celebrate marriage ruling

Mayor Bill de Blasio officiated two weddings and renewed one couple’s vows on Friday afternoon, just hours after the landmark Supreme Court rulingthat allows same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

Well wishers flooded the sidewalk in front of City Hall, and rainbow flags were displayed along the roof for the occasion.

“Today, love wins,” de Blasio said to a cheering crowd.

De Blasio married Denise Niewinski, deputy director of LGBTQ Policy and Practice at the Administration for Children’s Services and Cindy Jackson. Sarah Joseph, a foster care social worker with Catholic Guardian wed Katrina Council, a high school history teacher. The mayor will renew the vows of Terrence McNally, a playwright, and Thomas Kirdahy, a public advocate and the mayor’s college roommate.

“I’m having a completely emotional moment,” said Hannah Weverka. As the ceremony ended, a brass band started playing the wedding march.

“America will never forget this day, and neither will people all across the world who know the meaning of love and compassion. June 26, 2015, will forever be memorialized as a pivotal moment in the history of our nation,” de Blasio said in a statement on Friday morning. “Today, this country is richer – filled with more equality, more acceptance, and more love than yesterday. And for the people of this city, where the movement for LGBT rights began in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, we can be proud that we helped blaze the trail to this great victory.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered the spire at One World Trade Center to light up in rainbow colors on Sunday evening.
