On the fifth day of post-election protests in New York City, immigrants and activists went to the streets to speak out against Donald Trump’s presidential win.
The primary concern among the immigration advocates participating in Sunday’s demonstration was Trump’s assertions about deporting undocumented persons and hunting them down with a task force. Protesters chanted, “Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcomed here,” and held up signs that with the words “Hate won’t make us great,” “White silence = violence” and “Don’t mourn, organize.” On Saturday, an estimated 25,000 gathered in front of Trump International Hotel and Tower in Columbus Circle, and in front of Trump Tower on 5th Avenue where the president-elect lives, NBC reported. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Michael Moore gained entry into Trump Tower in an attempt to confront the next president. He broadcasted his journey on Facebook Live, as he attempted to get into an elevator but was stopped by Secret Service. “I was able to get into Trump Tower & deliver him a message: “You lost. Step aside.” SS took the note I wrote up & went 2 give it to him,” Moore wrote on Twitter.
In the days leading up to the election Moore warned Americans that Hillary will likely lose the election.
After being removed from the building, Moore, who released afilm called Trumplandon Oct. 19,talked to protesters for over an hour. “That doesn’t make me feel good, the fact that I was right. I never wanted to be more wrong,” Moore told the L.A. Times on Thursday. “I just don’t live in the bubble of New York and L.A. and I was worried with what I was witnessing in the Midwest, the Rust Belt, what I call the ‘Brexit’ states.” The NYPD told Metro that on Saturday they had arrested only two protesters.
Protests across the U.S. continued through the weekend in San Francisco, Oakland, California, and Portland, Oregon, where the protest turned into riots and 71 people were arrested Saturday for throwing road flares at police, according to news reports. On Sunday, Los Angeles had its biggest anti-Trump protest so far, with approximately 8,000 people participating.
In Indianapolis, two police officers were struck by rocks thrown by protesters on Saturday night.
Protests were also staged in Chicago, Washington., Dayton, Ohio, Cincinnati, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, Providence, Rhode Island, and Las Vegas.
