This weekend, while the media fixated on the debut of President Trump’s new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci — who declared multiple times during his inaugural interviews that he “loved” the president — someone tried to remind him that he was the original bro in a Trump bromance: Mike Pence.
In an op-ed posted on the Fox News website, the vice president offered effusive praise for the president, which he has done in the past but may have felt compelled to reiterate amid the president’s record low approval ratings, on the eve of the wobbly Senate health-care vote and with another homie muscling in on his turf.
“President Trump’s accomplishments are nothing short of historic,” Pence wrote. “But as the president likes to say, at this White House that’s just what we call a good start.”
Pence went on to list the Trump administration’s accomplishments, although they have technically been limited to the signing of executive orders and the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. He said “President Trump has signed more laws to slash through federal red tape than any president in American history,” and “under his watch, American businesses small and large have already created more than 800,000 new jobs since January.” He mentioned the administration’s plans to cut taxes four times.
On a personal note, Pence took care to express that he felt pride.
“As the father of a United States Marine, I couldn’t be more proud to serve alongside a president who cares so deeply about the men and women of the armed forces of the United States of America,” he said.
“It is the greatest privilege of my life to serve as vice president to a president who is fighting every single day to restore an America of freedom, prosperity and opportunity for all,” he added.
The comments echoed Pence’s remarks at a photo opportunity last month, in which each of Trump’s cabinet picks went around the table and professed their gratitude to and praise for Trump. “This is the greatest privilege of my life to serve as vice president to a president who’s keeping his word to the American people,” Pence said then.
