Corey Seager hit a go-ahead double in the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the visiting Atlanta Braves 3-2 and finish August with a 21-6 record.
The victory moved the Dodgers within a half-game of the National League West-leading San Francisco Giants, the closest they have been to first place since July 6.
Mookie Betts homered for the Dodgers, Chris Taylor drove in the game-tying run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly, and right-hander Walker Buehler gave up two runs over seven innings.
Braves center fielder Joc Pederson hit a home run in his return to Los Angeles and Charlie Morton pitched six strong innings. Atlanta’s Ozzie Albies left in the fifth inning after he fouled a Buehler pitch off the side of his left knee. Albies was carried off the field by two team trainers.
Brewers 6, Giants 2
Milwaukee rocked Johnny Cueto for six early runs and Brandon Woodruff pitched six sharp innings as the National League Central front-runners made it two straight wins at San Francisco.
Lorenzo Cain homered, singled and drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which moved a season-best 10 games ahead of the second-place Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central.
Brandon Belt homered for San Francisco, which took its third consecutive loss.
Angels 6, Yankees 4
Shohei Ohtani stole two bases, including home, and reliever Jake Petricka helped Los Angeles hang on against New York in Anaheim, Calif.
Jared Walsh hit a three-run homer and Phil Gosselin had a clutch two-run single for the Angels, who have won three in a row. Petricka got the Angels out of a jam in the eighth inning by striking out Gio Urshela and pinch hitter Luke Voit to preserve the lead.
Gary Sanchez hit a solo homer and Anthony Rizzo had two hits and scored twice for the Yankees, who have lost four straight.
Rangers 4, Rockies 3
Nathaniel Lowe had three hits, including a solo home run, to help Texas beat Colorado in Arlington, Texas.
Leody Taveras also homered for the Rangers, who have won three in a row. Rangers right-hander Jordan Lyles (7-11) bounced back from his worst outing of the season and allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
Sam Hilliard, C.J. Cron and Ryan McMahon homered for the Rockies. Austin Gomber (9-9) was stung by six walks in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs and four hits while striking out two.
White Sox 4, Pirates 2
Yasmani Grandal and Jose Abreu launched solo home runs and the Chicago bullpen contributed 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief as the White Sox beat visiting Pittsburgh for their fourth victory in five games.
White Sox starter Lucas Giolito left the game after 4 1/3 innings due to left hamstring tightness, having allowed two runs on three hits and four walks. Five White Sox relievers allowed two hits and no walks while striking out four. Liam Hendriks pitched the ninth inning to earn his 30th save.
Pittsburgh scored in the fifth on a Giolito wild pitch and Colin Moran’s single.
Rays 8, Red Sox 5
A six-run third inning snapped a tie and propelled Tampa Bay past Boston in St. Petersburg, Fla., the Rays’ ninth straight win.
Tampa Bay rookie Wander Franco, 20, extended his on-base streak to 31 straight games by going 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a walk. Randy Arozarena homered for the Rays, who are 31-11 since the All-Star break.
Rays starter Ryan Yarbrough (8-4) won for the seventh time in his past eight decisions by spinning six innings of two-run, five-hit ball. He fanned three with no walks. Kyle Schwarber homered and had two RBIs for third-place Boston, which has lost three straight.
Mets 6, Marlins 5 (completion of suspended game)
New York scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a walk-off win over Miami in the completion of a suspended game from April 11.
Miami used three pitchers in the ninth inning as New York got a two-run home run from Brandon Nimmo and Javier Baez’s RBI infield single to set up the final play.
Facing Dylan Floro (5-5), Michael Conforto singled to drive in Pete Alonso. After a bobble by catcher-turned-left fielder Jorge Alfaro, Baez kept coming and scored on a head-first dive a split-second ahead of the tag. Baez had drawn boos from Mets fans earlier in the game because of his “thumbs down” gesture directed at them on Sunday.
Mets 3, Marlins 1 (regularly scheduled game)
Michael Conforto slugged a two-run homer, leading New York over visiting Miami for the Mets’ third straight win — not including the victory earlier in the day in the resumption of a suspended game.
The Mets survived a shaky performance by second baseman Jonathan Villar. He had an error that led to an unearned run, and he was caught on the basepaths off second base, which cost New York a run.
Aaron Loup (4-0) got the win in relief, and Edwin Diaz pitched a perfect seventh for his 27th save in 31 chances this year.
Mariners 4, Astros 0
Abraham Toro hit a grand slam against his former team with one out in the eighth inning to snap a scoreless tie as Seattle defeated visiting Houston.
Toro’s homer to right-center field came off Kendall Graveman (5-1), who went from Seattle to Houston along with fellow reliever Rafael Montero in exchange for Toro and reliever Joe Smith on July 27.
Paul Sewald (9-3) got the victory with a scoreless inning of relief. Sean Doolittle, claimed off waivers from Cincinnati last week, worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth.
Padres 3, Diamondbacks 0
Blake Snell pitched seven no-hit innings and combined with two relievers on a three-hitter as San Diego blanked Arizona in Phoenix.
Snell (7-5) struck out 10 and walked two while throwing 107 pitches before departing. He retired the final 10 hitters he faced. San Diego’s Mark Melancon gave up back-to-back two-out singles in the ninth before completing his 36th save.
Manny Machado hit a two-run homer and Jurickson Profar added an RBI single for San Diego. Arizona’s Zac Gallen (2-8) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked four.
Indians 7, Royals 2
Amed Rosario was 5-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs as Cleveland defeated host Kansas City to open a three-game series.
It was Rosario’s second career multi-homer game, his first five-RBI game and his second five-hit game. Zach Plesac (9-4) earned the win with seven scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, struck out seven and walked none, though he did hit a batter.
Jakob Junis (2-4) took the loss. He gave up three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings. Carlos Santana and Andrew Benintendi drove in runs for the Royals in the ninth.
Athletics 9, Tigers 3
Matt Chapman hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs as Oakland powered past host Detroit for its third straight win.
Mark Canha added a two-run shot and Josh Harrison supplied three hits and drove in two runs. Deolis Guerra (3-1) tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the victory.
Robbie Grossman, Dustin Garneau and Derek Hill hit solo homers for Detroit, which has lost four straight. Tarik Skubal (8-12) allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings.
Phillies 12, Nationals 6
Andrew McCutchen drove in three runs with a homer and a double as Philadelphia rallied past Washington for its fifth straight win.
Rafael Marchan and Brad Miller also homered, and rookie Matt Vierling went 4-for-5 for Philadelphia, which collected 18 hits and seven walks. Bryce Harper had three hits, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Bailey Falter (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Patrick Corbin (7-14) gave up six runs on nine hits and four walks in five-plus innings as his ERA rose to 6.26. He was staked to a 5-2 lead but couldn’t hold it. Carter Kieboom homered for the second straight game for Washington, which has lost four straight.
Orioles 4, Blue Jays 2
Ramon Urias delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in a three-run sixth inning as Baltimore ended a four-game losing streak by beating host Toronto.
Keegan Akin (2-8) allowed one run, two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings to earn his second consecutive win. Cole Sulser pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his sixth save.
Toronto’s Hyun Jin Ryu (12-8) gave up three runs, three hits and three walks while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings. Danny Jansen and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit solo home runs for the Blue Jays.
Cubs 3, Twins 1
Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ hit home runs to lead Chicago past Minnesota on in the opener of a two-game series at Minneapolis.
Robinson Chirinos had an RBI triple for Chicago. Manuel Rodriguez (3-2) pitched two hitless innings of relief to pick up the win. Rowan Wick struck out two of the three batters he faced in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save.
Luis Arraez doubled, scored a run and had two hits for Minnesota, which went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. John Gant (4-9) took the loss despite allowing just two runs on three hits and no walks over five innings. He struck out five.
