Jonathan India homered and drove in a career-high five runs while Wade Miley threw seven scoreless innings as the Cincinnati Reds sent the visiting Chicago Cubs to their 12th straight loss, 14-5, Monday night.

Reds first baseman Joey Votto had three hits to pass 2,000 for his career and join Billy Williams (1971) as the only players in MLB history to reach 2,000 hits, 300 home runs and 1,000 RBIs in the same season. His RBI single in Cincinnati’s eight-run seventh gave him 2,001 for his career.

Miley (10-4) scattered four hits while striking out seven and walking one to join Tyler Mahle as a 10-game winner on the Cincinnati staff. It was also Miley’s 14th straight start without a losing decision (6-0 with eight no-decisions), dating to a May 19 loss against San Francisco.

The Reds, winners in nine of 13, reached double figures in runs for a major league-leading 18th time and the seventh time in a Miley start this season.

The Cubs have been outscored 64-24 in the last six games of their 12-game skid.

Yankees 2, Angels 1

Gerrit Cole pitched 5 2/3 strong innings in his return from the COVID-19 injured list and New York edged Los Angeles in a makeup game at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees won for the 10th time in 13 games. Cole (11-6) allowed one run and two hits in his first start since getting shelled for eight runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 14-0 loss at Tampa Bay on July 29. He tested positive for coronavirus two weeks ago and got nine strikeouts while issuing one walk in a 90-pitch outing.

Justin Upton homered three batters in off Cole as the Angels began a four-city, 10-game road trip by losing for the seventh time in 10 games.

Twins 5, Indians 4 (10 innings)

Jorge Polanco doubled home Max Kepler from second base with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to carry Minnesota past Cleveland in Minneapolis.

Kepler, who walked three times and scored twice, and Ryan Jeffers each homered and Josh Donaldson had three hits for Minnesota, which overcame four errors to win its third straight game. Caleb Thielbar (5-0), who struck out two during a 1-2-3 10th, picked up the win.

Bradley Zimmer went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Amed Rosario had two hits and a run for the Indians.

Royals 7, Astros 6

Salvador Perez’s two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning lifted host Kansas City past Houston in the opener of a four-game series.

Whit Merrifield had three hits, Nicky Lopez stole three bases and Hunter Dozier added a solo homer for the Royals, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Jason Castro homered with one out in the ninth to draw Houston to within one run, but Scott Barlow (5-3) retired Jake Meyers and Jose Altuve to close out the victory. Altuve went 3-for-5 while Carlos Correa and Aledmys Diaz each had a homer and a single for the Astros, who have lost two in a row.

Rays 9, Orioles 2

Tampa Bay’s Josh Fleming rebounded from his worst career outing for his 10th victory and the Rays smashed five home runs to push Baltimore’s losing streak to 12 games in a win in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Following opener Collin McHugh’s two perfect innings, Fleming (10-6), who was rocked for a career-high 11 hits and 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings in his previous start, allowed six hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Brandon Lowe slugged two homers, Brett Phillips hit an inside-the-parker and Kevin Kiermaier and Mike Brosseau also went deep.

The Orioles fell to 1-12 against the Rays this season and have dropped 18 of their last 20 matchups. Baltimore’s Matt Harvey (6-12) surrendered five hits and five runs while striking out six in 4 2/3 innings.

Braves 12, Marlins 2

Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies each produced three hits and three RBIs, leading Atlanta over host Miami.

Adam Duvall, traded by the Marlins to Atlanta last month, hit his 27th homer of the season. Freeman also homered, his 26th of the year, as the Braves totaled 14 hits.

Duvall’s homer dented a concession stand well beyond the left field fence.

Dodgers 2, Pirates 1

Max Muncy belted a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning as Los Angeles recorded a victory over Pittsburgh.

Muncy’s 26th blast of the season gave the Dodgers their 14th consecutive victory over the Pirates. Billy McKinney also homered for Los Angeles, which won for the 11th time in its past 14 games overall.

Pittsburgh has dropped three straight and 13 of its past 15 games.

Rockies 6, Padres 5

C.J. Cron hit a walk-off, solo homer in the ninth inning, and Colorado beat San Diego in Denver.

Cron finished with two hits, Connor Joe homered among his two hits and Charlie Blackmon also went deep for Colorado.

Trent Grisham homered and Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth and Wil Myers had two hits each for the Padres, who have lost five of their last six games — with two coming on walk-offs.

Giants 7, Mets 5

Kris Bryant made his biggest impression of the season on the National League playoff picture with two home runs, powering San Francisco to a victory over visiting New York in the opener of a critical three-game series for both teams.

Brandon Belt also homered, Brandon Crawford had four hits and right-hander Kevin Gausman (12-5) established a career-high for wins as the Giants, leaders of the NL West, began a stretch of 19 straight games against fellow contenders with a hard-fought win.

Pete Alonso had a two-run triple and Jonathan Villar a two-run homer for the Mets, who lost their fourth straight to drop to .500 at 59-59 and fell 3 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves, their largest deficit of the season, in the NL East.

White Sox 5, Athletics 2

Luis Robert had three hits, including a solo home run, Seby Zavala had two hits and two RBIs and starter Dallas Keuchel and three relievers combined on a six-hitter to lift host Chicago to a victory against Oakland.

Tim Anderson also had two hits for the White Sox, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Robert’s eighth-inning blast capped the scoring and was the team’s only extra-base hit among its 10 hits in the game.

Oakland righty Frankie Montas was unsuccessful in his bid to set a career high in victories. Montas (9-9) spaced three runs and eight hits in five innings with three walks and six strikeouts.
