MLB roundup: Phillies overtake Mets, grab NL East lead

Bryce Harper homered and drove in two runs while Didi Gregorius homered and tripled as the host Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 4-2 on Friday to move into first place in the National League East.

The red-hot Phillies won their sixth in a row, and they have picked up five games on the Mets in the past seven days.

Phillies starter Kyle Gibson (8-3) tossed six solid innings and gave up four hits and one run with four walks and three strikeouts.

Mets starter Marcus Stroman (7-11) gave up two runs on five hits in five innings. Jonathan Villar homered for New York, which lost for the fifth time in the past six games.

Angels 4, Dodgers 3 (10 innings)

Jose Iglesias hit a home run and added a go-ahead RBI double in the 10th inning as the Los Angeles Angels earned a victory against the host Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jack Mayfield homered and contributed an RBI bloop single in the 10th for the Angels, who won their fourth consecutive game and improved to 3-1 against the Dodgers this season.

Angels rookie Austin Warren (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to pick up his first career victory. Raisel Iglesias earned his 24th save in 29 opportunities.

Yankees 3, Mariners 2 (11 innings)

Brett Gardner hit a walk-off single with two outs in the 11th inning as host New York rallied late to defeat Seattle.

Albert Abreu (1-0), New York’s ninth pitcher, pitched a scoreless 11th to get the win. The Yankees trailed twice, tying the game in the eighth on Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly and in the 10th on Giancarlo Stanton’s single.

Keynan Middleton (0-2) pitched the 11th for the Mariners and took the loss. Abraham Toro and J.P. Crawford drove in runs with singles for Seattle.

White Sox 8, Cubs 6 (10 innings)

Brian Goodwin belted a two-run homer in the 10th inning after the Chicago Cubs tied the game in the eighth on Andrew Romine’s three-run blast, and the visiting Chicago White Sox won the opener of a three-game series.

Goodwin’s homer off rookie Manuel Rodriguez (0-2) scored Jose Abreu, who began the inning at second base as the automatic runner. The White Sox added two more runs in the inning on RBI singles by Gavin Sheets and Tim Anderson.

The Cubs got a two-run homer from Frank Schwindel in the bottom of the 10th, but it wasn’t enough.

Brewers 2, Giants 1 (10 innings)

Rowdy Tellez delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give host Milwaukee a victory over San Francisco in the opener of a three-game series between division leaders.

Giants left-hander Jarlin Garcia (3-3) came on in the 10th with Avisail Garcia starting at second base. Tellez led off and lined a 1-2 pitch the opposite way to left to score Avisail Garcia. Brent Suter (11-5) got the win.

Avisail Garcia homered in the second inning, and Brandon Belt went deep for the Giants in the sixth.

Athletics 4, Rangers 1 (11 innings)

Starling Marte produced Oakland’s second consecutive walk-off win, bombing a three-run homer run in the 11th inning to defeat visiting Texas.

Marte, who had two of Oakland’s four hits, followed a Mark Canha hit-by-pitch with his shot to left field, also scoring automatic runner Tony Kemp from second base. It came against losing pitcher Jimmy Herget (0-1).

A’s relievers Andrew Chafin and Yusmeiro Petit (8-1) both retired the Rangers 1-2-3 in extra innings to prevent the automatic runners from scoring.

Twins 5, Astros 4 (11 innings)

Josh Donaldson delivered an RBI single in the 11th inning and visiting Minnesota rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Houston.

Mitch Garver went deep for the Twins, who won for the third time in their past four games. Rookie Bailey Ober worked five innings, and the Astros managed a baserunner in all five. However, Ober managed to strand runners in the first, third, fourth and fifth in a no-decision.

The Astros received home runs from Taylor Jones and Chas McCormick, plus exceptional relief work from Ryne Stanek, Kendall Graveman and Ryan Pressly, who combined for three hitless innings and five strikeouts. Still, Houston lost for the fifth time in six games.

Diamondbacks 8, Padres 5

Arizona spotted host San Diego a five-run lead before storming back with eight unanswered runs in the span of 10 hitters to win for just the 14th time on the road this season.

The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the third and six in an eight-hit fourth. Reliever Matt Peacock (5-6) delivered a two-run, go-ahead single in the fourth and held the Padres scoreless on three hits with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

Trent Grisham homered and drove in two runs while Jake Cronenworth also had two RBIs for the Padres.

Reds 10, Pirates 0

Mike Moustakas doubled three times in his return from a right heel injury while Tucker Barnhart launched a long home run in a seven-run first inning as Cincinnati earned another win over the visiting Pittsburgh.

Wade Miley (9-4) won his fifth straight decision, limiting the Pirates to six hits over seven shutout innings, striking out five and walking two.

The Reds have posted 10 consecutive home wins over the Pirates.

Blue Jays 12, Red Sox 4

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a two-run home run in a nine-run fifth inning and Toronto defeated visiting Boston.

Teoscar Hernandez and George Springer, who both had two-run doubles in the fifth, finished with three RBIs apiece for the Blue Jays. Toronto has won seven of the first eight games of an 11-game homestand.

Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (4-1) allowed two runs, four hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four.

Braves 8, Nationals 4

Adam Duvall and Freddie Freeman combined to drive in five runs and spark Atlanta over visiting Washington. The Braves extended their winning streak to four games.

Duvall, acquired from Miami at the trade deadline, went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBIs. Freeman was 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Austin Riley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and extended his streak of reaching base to a career-best 19 games.

Washington starter Erick Fedde (4-8) also worked 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk. The Nationals lost their fifth straight game.

Rays 10, Orioles 6

Nelson Cruz’s three-run homer tied the game in the sixth inning and his two-run double scored the go-ahead runs in a five-run eighth as visiting Tampa Bay rallied past Baltimore.

Manuel Margot added three hits and an RBI as six Rays hitters had two or more hits, helping Tampa Bay come back from a 5-2 deficit. Drew Rasmussen (1-1) pitched 2 1/3 innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits.

Pedro Severino had three hits and a solo home run, and Austin Hays also homered for the Orioles, who have lost three straight. Cedric Mullins extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Indians 6, Tigers 1

Cal Quantrill recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings and Myles Straw had a pair of RBI singles to send host Cleveland past Detroit.

Cleveland’s No. 9 batter, Ernie Clement, joined Straw with three hits, and Bobby Bradley ripped a two-run double before exiting due to a left knee injury. Amed Rosario also drove in a pair of runs as the Indians erupted for 15 hits to improve to 9-5 against the Tigers this season.

Quantrill (3-2) allowed four hits — all singles — in seven innings to improve to 3-0 in his past six outings. Detroit rookie Matt Manning (2-5) yielded six runs on 10 hits in four innings.

Cardinals 4, Royals 2

Tyler O’Neill went 4-for-4 with a homer and two runs as St. Louis defeated visiting Kansas City.

Paul Goldschmidt added a homer and two RBIs for the Cardinals, who rebounded from getting swept in a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves.

Adam Wainwright (10-6) held the Royals to two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked two in his 12th start of seven or more innings this season.

Rockies 14, Marlins 2

C.J. Cron hit two homers, drove in four runs and scored four times, Charlie Blackmon, Elias Diaz and Ryan McMahon also went deep, and Colorado blew out Miami in Denver.

Sam Hilliard had three hits for the Rockies. Colorado starter German Marquez (10-8) didn’t allow a hit until Bryan De La Cruz doubled with one out in the fifth. Marquez pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-10) allowed 10 runs on 10 hits, including three home runs, in 3 2/3 innings. Miguel Rojas homered for Miami.
