More than 1,700 flights canceled ahead of snowstorm

Thousands of flight were canceled by Monday morning in anticipation of a major snowstorm that was expected to dump up to 20 inches in some areas of the Northeast.

Flight-status tracking service FlightAware.com reportsthat 1,769 flights within, into or out of the U.S. Tuesday have been canceled as of 11 a.m. Monday. Southwest and American Airlines account for the majority of cancelations.

Baltimore/Washington International Airport has seen the greatest impact, with 218 departing flights and 212 incoming flights being canceled as of Monday. LaGuardia and JFK airports in New York, Philadelphia International, Reagan National in Washington, and Boston Logan International are also seeing high cancelation rates for Tuesday.

Fliers departing Wednesdaywill also experience travel disruptions. Forty-one flights originating at BWI and 11 departing Logan have been canceled preemptively, according to FlightAware.

United has yet to cancel any flights originating in the U.S. from its primary East Coast hub, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, but that is expected to change, reports say.
