Mo, tell us how you really feel.

Following Tuesday’s news that the New Orleans Saints gave defensive end Cam Jordan a five-year, $60 million deal, the pressure is now on the New York Jets to secure the future of their own star defensive end. With contract negotiations ongoing to extend Muhammad Wilkerson’s stay with the team in this the final year of his rookie contract, the market value of the former first round pick just went up after Jordan’s deal.

All of which led Wilkerson on Tuesday to take to Twitter shortly after news about Jordan’s extension trickled out:

“Yup I see how this works,” Wilkerson wrote.

Given their relative comparability in production – Wilkerson has 237 tackles and 24.5 sacks in four seasons and Jordan has 196 tackles and 29 sacks in as many NFL campaigns – it isn’t far-fetched to think that the Jets would need to offer their star defensive end similar money. They do hold a bargaining chip, however, with the selection of Leonard Williams with the sixth overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Considered the top player on many draft boards, Williams could be a natural replacement should the Jets look to unload Wilkerson via a trade or prove unable to sign him to a long-term deal. Suddenly, it is looking more and more likely that Wilkerson won’t be a Jet beyond this season,if he makes it even that far.
