It’s been more than 10 years since the publication of Jay Asher’s “Thirteen Reasons Why,” a YA novel about high school drama, the weight of careless words and the impact of suicide. Today, Netflix released a teaser of executive producer Selena Gomez’s long-awaited 13-episode adaptation of the story. The plot follows the life and more specifically, the death of Hannah Baker, a high school student who has taken her own life. Clay Jensen, a fellow classmate and secret admirer of Hannah, is the main focus though. Coming home from school one day, he finds a mysterious package with a set of 13 cassette tapes—each tape providing a name of a person and ultimately, a reason for her suicide. Netflix’s teaser is just as chilling as the novel itself. “Why didn’t you say this to me when I was alive?” a ghost of Hannah cries.
While cassette tapes may be as old as the dinosaurs in the minds of most teenagers today, the mysterious use will captivate audiences. The good news: all 13 episodes will be released at once on March 31, so get ready to binge away. Watch the ominous teaser below.
