At least 217 people were confirmed dead after a magnitude 7.1 quake struck Mexico and destroyed hundreds of buildings. Experts are calling it the most lethal quake to strike the nation in a generation.
Half of those confirmed dead were in Mexico City, the nation’s capital. By Wednesday morning, rescuers were scrambling to pull dozens of children trapped beneath a Mexico City school.
The disaster came less than two weeks after a powerful tremor killed nearly 100 people in the south of the country.
Photographs taken in the aftermath show twisted concrete, rubble, and emergency workers desperate to locate survivors.
