The San Jose Sharks visit the nation’s capital tonight when they face off against the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m. ET at the Capital One Arena. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season.
The Sharks are 28-16-7 with 63 points this year which ranks them third in the Western Conference. They are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, surrendering 18 goals in that span.
Although they are on a losing streak, San Jose remains just six points back of the top-seeded Flames and just one point back of the two seed. The West is still a tight race as we approach the All-Star break. There is just a two-point differential between seeds Nos. 2-through-5.
San Jose has had a lot of struggles on the road this season. They are 11-12-3 away from home which will make tonight’s contest against the Capitals a tough matchup.
Washington has been on a major slide as of late. The Capitals are 27-16-5 with 59 points and are currently on a five-game losing streak. They are tied for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Capitals have been struggling to score the puck lately. They scored just four goals in their first four games of this losing streak before breaking out with five goals in their last game. Unfortunately for the Caps, they still lost 8-5 to the Blackhawks.
Although Alex Ovechkin leads the league in goals with 33, he hasn’t really been himself as of late. So far this month he has only scored just four goals which are the fewest of any month so far this season. The Capitals slide this month could be a direct result of Ovechkin’s struggles.
