No celebratory photo for Red Bulls: “This isn’t the World Cup”

The infamous photo of New York City F.C. celebrating their July 3 rivalry win was not replicated by the New York Red Bulls, who refused to over-indulge following their own 4-1 win on Sunday in the Hudson Derby.

After beating the Red Bulls 2-0 earlier this month, NYCFC’s David Villa took a photo of the entire team in the locker room, beaming with joy after their first victory in the rivalry. On Sunday after thoroughly dominating NYCFC, the Red Bulls would not gloat or show too much emotion in the locker room in the afterglow of their performance.

Forward Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice in the match to spearhead a thoroughly comprehensive result for the home side.

“We played them down at their place and they beat us; we weren’t happy about it,” Wright-Phillips said.

“They made a meal of it and rightly so. Today we wanted to get our own back; we did.”

And no, the team did not stop to take a selfie after the match.

“No, I feel like it’s not the World Cup, you know? It isn’t the World Cup. Obviously each team, their own,” Wright-Phillips said. “I don’t hate them for that but it’s just not our style. This game was about three points; we set out to get them and we got it.”
