You’ll need a treasure map to find the South Street Seaport’s newest drinking destination.
Already a hub of easy summertime vibes with its ivy-draped outdoor Garden Bar and tons of tables flanking its outpost of the beer-and-burgers joint Clinton Hall, the latest addition is a speakeasy dubbed Mr. Cannon.
“The Seaport is kind of a hidden gem in itself,” says Jeremy Lieberman, director of marketing at Lure Group, which is overseeing all of the new food and beverage projects at the Seaport this summer. “So we figured, why not take a hidden gem and put an even more awesome hidden gem in the Seaport?”
Mr. Cannon is no bilge rat, either. Look for a carved portrait of the dapper rodent to find the bar. Cards bearing a treasure map to the bar are also scattered around various locations in the Seaport, or for those who don’t feel like hunting for it, the actual address is 206 Front St.
The upscale tavern’s drinks menu by master mixologist Christopher Kerns consists of seven cocktails ($17-$23) and seven champagnes.
“It’s going to be really unique but eclectic tastes that everyone is familiar with but done in a different way,” Lieberman says about the cocktail menu with options like the grapefruit-infused gin 817 Martini and the scurvy-fighting Earth & Elegance with pineapple, beet and lemon juices blended with gin and rum.
The champagne bottles are served with caviar and other “traditional accompaniments” including a $925 bottle of Dom Perignon Rose. Hope you’ve come into some serious booty recently.
Unlike many of the speakeasies around the city that are about the size of a closet, Mr. Cannon packs in a reasonable 25 seats, many of them in plush velvet chairs — no pirate’s life for you.
Seek out the speakeasy for a pre-movie drink at the lux iPic dine-in theater, a post-show nightcap following the weekly live music series in the plaza on Thursdays and Saturdays, or your last stop after hitting up the Seaport’s collection of food trucks, including a milkshake emporium by Black Tap.
