Not so fast: IndyCar could be coming to Boston after all

The revving of high-powered engines may be screaming through the streets of Boston soon after all.

City Hall on Thursday afternoon hinted the Hub could welcome an IndyCar race to the city at some point in the future — but with a different promoter.

This development came after the head of the Grand Prix of Boston announced late last week it was steering the racing event elsewhere.

“Boston has an open door for new and innovative ideas that will benefit the city’s future. While it is disappointing that IndyCar will not race in Boston this year, we look forward to continuing our work together to bring IndyCar to Boston in the future,” reads a joint statement from Mayor Marty Walsh and Mark Miles, CEO of the IndyCar parent company Hulman and Company.

“Boston has always been a great partner for IndyCar and we are confident that with a strong local promoter the race can be a great success,” the statement continues.

Last Friday, Grand Prix of Boston CEO John Casey made the surprise declaration that he was pulling out of plans to host the race in the Boston Seaport.

“The relationship between us and the city is not working,” Casey told The Boston Globe.

Promoters are now in the process of sending refunds to fans who bought tickets for the race, which had been scheduled for Labor Day weekend of this year. They plan to move to another city in New England.
