After enjoying a fleeting glimpse of spring over the weekend, New Yorkers should prepare themselves physically and mentally for the return of unpleasant winter weather.
New York City can expect to see some light snow and drizzle this week, with the wintry mix expected to start on Monday afternoon and linger through Tuesday. The dreary precipitation will be accompanied by a drop in temperatures in the tri-state region.
Snow was expected to taper off mid-Tuesday, although flurries may appear Tuesday afternoon, with only light accumulation expected. And there is more snow due at the end of the week — on Groundhog Day, to be exact. The National Weather Service predicted a 30 percent chance of snow on Friday.
The New York City Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert, meaning city workers were on standby to spread salt and clear snow and ice from NYC roads.
But the bad news doesn’t end with this week’s weather report.
Forecasters are predicting a particularly freezing February with “several chances of snow” for the New York region between Feb. 4 and Feb. 15, according to Accuweather. There is also a chance of snow on Super Bowl Sunday, meteorologists said.
“As waves of arctic air return to the northern part of the United States and warmth holds in the South, a busy winter storm track will set up during the first half of February,” Accuweather.com reported.
