NYCC 2017 will only sell single-day tickets — why that’s a good thing

New York Comic Con will only offer single-day tickets to NYCC 2017, and it’s all because of the Javits Center.

The largest convention for all things superheroes, fantasy and comics in the U.S. returns on Oct. 5-8, and organizer Reedpop announced Friday morning that 3-Day and 4-Day tickets won’t be an option. “We’re going to be real with you, this is a very bittersweet announcement,” begins the company’s statement.

“You may or may not know that the Javits Center is going to be under construction. This means we’ll be working with some space limitations and we want to make sure as many people have the opportunity to buy a ticket and come to the show as possible. Selling only single day tickets will give more fans the chance to buy a ticket for at least a day to experience the fun of NYCC.”

To say that the Javits will be “under construction” is an understatement. New York’s largest even venue is still not large enough, and hasn’t been for some time. The work going on now will expand it by 1.2 million square feet to add nearly another half of a Javits onto the existing building, including a 60,000-square-foot ballroom billed as the largest in the Northeast, according to Commercial Observer.

So the only tickets that will be available to NYCC 2017 are single-day Thursday ($45), Friday ($50), Saturday ($50), Sunday ($50) and Sunday Kids ($10). The good news for returning fans is that those who bought tickets to NYCC 2016 through the Fan Verification system will have first crack at a limited number of tickets during a special presale (no date was announced for that).

Anyone else who completes the Fan Verification process, which reopens on April 19, can also take part in a later presale.

Let’s be real here, guys. How many of us with multiple-day tickets had the stamina to attend all of them anyway? The Javits is already a formidable venue of panels, exhibits, gaming, showrooms and endless cosplayers, not to mention its massive expansion last year to three other off-site venues with their own events and booths.

That said, there are fans who do have the stamina for all four days (probably actual superheroes). For you, this change pushes the price for attending NYCC wayyy up: 3-Day tickets were $85 last year, while 4-Day passes went for $115. For 2017, those prices will be $145-$150 for a 3-Day ticket and $195 for all four days. Ouch.

We’re still bullish on the idea though. Getting more people in to experience the show is good for fandom, and a larger Javits means more Comic Con in the future for all of us.
