NYPD officer allegedly took bribes from clubs for ‘protection’

An NYPD detective pleaded not guilty Tuesday to allegations he took money from Flushing karaoke clubs known for drug sales in exchange for “protection” from busts.

Officer Yatyu Yam was arraigned on charges of receiving bribes, official misconduct and receiving reward for official misconduct after authorities claim Yam told an unnamed informant he tipped off a club manager about an upcoming bust, NBC reported, adding that Yam also secured the release of individuals, without charges, suspected of possessing drugs in Flushing clubs.

A manager of two other Flushing clubs told authorities that he paid Yam about $2,000 each month for three years of “protection,” according to court papers referenced by NBC, which also stated that Yam allegedly asked that a fellow officer known for “thoroughness” not be allowed to do club inspections.

Another officer, Robert Sung, turned himself in Tuesday on related allegations, ABC reported, adding that more officers may be indicted as this investigation continues.

Yam, a 10-year NYPD veteran, was arrested Monday and has been suspended without pay, authorities said to NBC, which added that he was held on $25,000 bail and was ordered to surrender his passport and firearms.
