Patriots coaches could testify in Hernandez murder trial

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichickand offensive coordinator Josh McDanielsare on a list of potential witnesses in the upcoming murder trial for former tight end and already-convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez.

The coaches were among the more than 280 names mentioned on an 11-page list of potential defense witnesses. Belichick, McDaniels andMiami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey are listed with other people that Hernandez’s lawyers may want to speak with and “reserves the right to add them later.”

Another document released Wednesday included transcripts of calls between Hernandez and Pouncey in which Hernandez describes people who would “try” (disrespect) him. Prosecutors want the calls to be submitted as evidence, according to WCVB.

Jury selection has been underway since Feb. 14 for the trial in which Hernandez is accused of killingDaniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtadooutside a nightclub inBoston’s South End on July 12, 2012. The trial is slated to start March 1.

Prosecutors say Hernandez fatally shot the men after leaving the club because one of them had spilled a drink on him at one point during the night.Hernandez is charged withtwo counts of first-degree murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Hernandez is already serving life in prison for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. The Patriots coaches were not called to testify during that trial, but team owner Robert Kraft did take the stand.
