“One of the boats was carrying six Syrians when it sank after leaving Akyarlar, in a desperate attempt to cross the 5km Aegean straight to Kos that represented their best chance of entering the EU,” The Independent writes. “According to Turkey’s Dogan news agency, three children and a woman from the small boat drowned. Two people survived after swimming back to shore in life jackets.” RELATED:71 dead migrants found in abandoned truck in Austria The shocking pictures drew an immediate reaction from the internet with people across various channels expressing both remorse and outrage.

May this beautiful child rest in peace - and may we all be forgiven for our dastardly parts, either by acts of commission or omission, in failing to help him. #FreeSyria
