A photographer has imagined what our favorite superheroes would look like if they plied their trade in the 16th & 17th centuries. In his “Super Flemish” series, Sacha Goldberger mashed up the famous faces of comic book characters with the refined aesthetic and stylings of Flemish portraiture. Metro catches up with the photographer to learn about his unique portraits.
Metro: What was the inspirationbehind this photographyproject?
SG: My love of comics andFlemish painting… And thechallenge of how to mix twoimpossible things.
Why the 16th century? Andwhy those specific heroes?
The odd clash of heroes andnarcissism inherent in theportrait genre. After all, they are supposed to savethe world, not to pose for apicture. What have people saidabout the series?
The reaction of the audienceis already so much betterthan I could imagine… I amvery pleased about it.

I’m a big fan of the lighting and poses of portrait painting from that period. The
ultimate question was: could I put my favorite superheroes from comic books in this kind of ambience…
What else makes this anamusing project?
