The story about a Brazilian soccer game gone double-homicide has Brazilians referencing the bloody massacres seen onGame of Thrones. After an altercation over a red card, the referee of the pickup soccer game in the small rural village of Centro do Meio, in the state of Maranhão, Octavio da Silva stabbed Josenir dos Santos. What happened next is so gruesome that news outlets across the world have picked up the story: an angry group of spectators (and, according to Brazilian media outlets, family members of the stabbed man) held the referee, tied him up, stoned him and mutilated his body.
Graphic photos posted on the blog of a local A.M. radio host, Antonio Filho Mirante, show blurry images of a decapitated head speared on a fencepost and another image of what he reports is da Silva’s body, cut into pieces. Local police tell Reuters that a 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident on July 2, in the nearby headquarters in Santa Ines.
One woman interviewed on Brazilian television program who lives in Centro do Meio expressed her outrage at the situation: “I would want justice, if it existed,” she said. The lead investigator looking into the crime, Valter Costa, said police are using footage and photos taken with cell phones to move the investigation forward. “Witness reports have already indicated that certain suspects were present at the time of the crime. We will identify and hold all parties involved responsible. One crime never will justify another,” Costa said.
