A wise person once said, musicians want to be athletes and athletes want to be musicians. I believe that wise person also said it is a terrible, terrible idea.
If you’re one of the millions who’ve been watching the World Cup on ESPN, you’ve probably seen American commentator Alexi Lalas. You also probably remember him from his stint on the national team from 1991 to 1998.
Oh, who am I kidding? All you know him for is his flaming red hair and goatee.

Unsurprisingly, considering the hippie-esque hair, Lalas is also a musician. He plays guitar and is frontman for a band called (fittingly) Ginger. You can even purchase his quintessentially ’90s indie rock on iTunes.
To be fair, we’ve heard worse music from athletes/celebrities before. But that’s not saying much after you listen to Shaquille O’Neal rap.
Lalas released a new album called “Tiny Demons” just before this year’s World Cup and has been promoting it on Twitter. If you listened to the title track above, you already know he’s changed his style a bit. I’m no music critic, but a two-minute instrumental intro is probably not going to get you too much radio play nowadays. It’s also a little annoyingly low-fi, but I suppose that’s the natural progression of indie rock today.
We miss the Goldfinger vibe.
