Plea deal in deadly Long Island drag racing crash angers victims’ families

A plea deal for the Farmingdale driver charged with drag racing a vehicle that crashed, killing five teens, has angered the victims’ families.

Cory Gloe, 19, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, assault, criminally negligent homicide and other charges in exchange for a commitment from Judge Terence Murphy that he would serve six months in jail and be granted youthful offender status, according to Newsday.

The accident, which happened in May 2014, involved another car that was allegedly racing Gloe at the time, ABC reported. Police said that car crossed the road’s centerline and struck an oncoming SUV, resulting in the deaths of the car’s five teenage occupants.

Gloe’s attorney claimed that the wreck was the other teenage driver’s fault and there was no proof that speeding took place, Newsday added. Authorities said Gloe’s car did not make contact with the other car or the SUV.

Prosecutors asked Judge Murphy not to treat Gloe as a youthful offender at his sentencing on May 20, according to ABC, which added that the five victims’ families were angered by Gloe’s deal.

The two occupants of the SUV were injured but survived, according to ABC.

All five teenage victims were either current or former students at Farmingdale High School, Newsday added.
