These New Yorkers are poets and they definitely know it.
Last week, Metro New York, together with the Office of the Mayor and the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs launched the annual “PoetweetNYC” Twitter poetry contest.
From April 11 through 15, New Yorkers and Twitter users from across the country were asked to submit their best poems via social media using the hashtag #PoetweetNYC.
The basic rules were to “keep it clean and keep it to one tweet” and, in honor of Poem in Your Pocket Day, the top five poems are printed below. Poem in Your Pocket Day is a citywide celebration that encourages New Yorkers to appreciate poetry and emphasize the importance of literacy. During the day, New Yorkers are encouraged to carry a poem in their pocket to share with friends, family and colleagues. #PoetweetNYC 2016 winners:
