Amid the protests and opposition against President Donald Trump’s travel ban, poignant words about the Muslim community from the last Republican to occupy the Oval Office have resurfaced.
Jenna Bush Hager posted on Twitter Tuesday a portion of a 2001 speech her father, President George W. Bush, gave at the Islamic Center of Washington just days after the 9/11 terror attacks.
“The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. … Islam is peace,” the excerpt began.

In our anger and emotion, our fellow Americans must treat each other with respect,” Bush continued. The passage ended with Bush saying that “Those who feel like they can intimidate our fellow citizens to take out their anger don’t represent the best of America, they represent the worst of humankind and they should be ashamed of that kind of behavior.” RELATED: Trump’s travel ban polarizes America: Reuters/Ipsos poll On Friday, Trump issued the order that said travelers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen could not enter the U.S. for 90 days and banned refugees for 120 days. Protests in airports and cities across the nation ensued, and still continue. Bush Hager shared her father’s speech with a quote from it — “This is not the America I know” — and wrote, “just a reminder this am to teach acceptance and love to our kids for all races, all religions.” Read the entire excerpt of President Bush’s speech below.
