Provincial finance minister Michael Baker has stepped down from his cabinet position for health reasons.
Baker has been praised by all parties in recent years for doing his job as finance minister despite battling skin cancer since 2006.
While Baker will keep the title, Chris d’Entremont will take over as acting finance minister for the coming months, said Wade Keller, Premier Rodney MacDonald’s director of communications.
d’Entremont is currently minister of community services and Acadian affairs.
Last year, Baker received a standing ovation when he unveiled the provincial budget. Even opposition MLAs who voted against the budget applauded his dedication. Earlier this month a Bridgewater justice centre was named after him.
In early January, Baker said he planned on re-offering in the next election.
However, his condition has worsened in the weeks since then.
