Pussy Riot strike back at Trump with celebration of the vagina

Pussy Riot has a message for DonaldTrump: Grab the pussy, and the Pussy bites back.

The feminist punk-rock troupe based in Moscow released its latest song, “Straight Outta Vagina,” Tuesday as a riposte against the Republican presidential candidate and his pussy-grabbing ways, as well as the U.S. election and its unshakeable ties to Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

“This song could be considered an answer to Trump,” Pussy Riot’sNadya Tolokonnikovtold The Guardian. “But I believe the idea of powerful female sexuality is much bigger than any populist megalomaniac man … Vagina is bigger than Trump.”

Comparing the spread of patriarchal and misogynistic ideas to sexually transmitted diseases,Tolokonnikovsaid, “Politicians are praising ‘strong leadership.’ Trump openly supports the authoritarian methods of Vladimir Putin. And it’s scary. It’s not the world in which I want to live.”

“Straight Outta Vagina” actually predates Trump’slewd video leak: Pussy Riot recorded the video in February with U.S. musician Dave Sitek. They shot the video in Los Angeles.

The Guardian reported Pussy Riot is expected to release two more videos commenting on U.S. and Russian politics.And it’s a topic Tolokonnikov is uniquely positioned to criticize. She and her band of five staged a performance in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior against the church leaders’ support for Putin. She and Pussy Riot cofounderMaria Alyokhina spent almost two years in prison after being charged with “hooliganism” at the event.Now, Tolokonnikova is out and louder than ever. (Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova are no longer working together.)

“Straight Outta Vagina” takes lyrical hits against misogyny, revealing the unbridled power of women, with lines like “Don’t play stupid, don’t play dumb, vagina’s where you’re really from,” and “I wear my vag as a badge of honor.”

In their iconic pastel balaclavas, the women show off their muscles and strut in front of urinals as men in sleek black suits and red heels admire their visages in the mirror. And in their typically provocative style, Pussy Riot backdropped the trippy, fantasy world with Christian iconography.
