The banner was hung on the northside of the bridge before 2 p.m.; witnesses who tweeted photos wrote that the act was done by two men,PIX11reported. PIX11also speculated that the flag might be connected to a 2014 pop-up shop in Gramercythat sold Peacemaker Putin gear in an effort to “show the heroic” side of the Russian leader.

The flag was removed by police before 3 p.m., according to Gothamist.
